Trini passport woes

How long did it take for you to receive your passport?

Last year it took me less than 2 weeks, and I guess for many of this blog’s readers, that’s a pretty average time for them too.

So please spare a thought for my friends in Trinidad and Tobago who, on average, have to wait OVER 1 YEAR just for an interview date for their passports. The length of processing time is wearily acknowledge locally, and claims by the National Security Minister Martin Joseph that processing times- from application to completion of passport- have been reduced to 32 days have been widely mocked.

The delay has come about because of the move to machine readable passports, required for travel to the US, and now many other countries.

Can you imagine the indignity and difficulty of not being able to travel because it took you so long just to get a passport?

Thankfully the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), attended by Gordon Brown and HM the Queen, is being held IN Trinidad later this month, so Trini officials won’t have to worry about not having their papers in order to travel.. but of course those sorts of woes don’t affect officials.
