Two man rat…

Congratulations are in order for Simon Woolley of Operation Black Vote who has been appointed a Commissioner at the Commission for Equalities and Human Rights.

Woolley’s a great guy and passionate about what he does.

His appointment is a bit of a surprise though, given that he’s often been critical of the current head of the CEHR, Trevor Phillips.

Woolley has criticised Phillips in the past, calling on him to be more ‘humble‘ and pointing out that the body needed a chairman with ‘conviction‘.

Woolley’s appointment to the CEHR reminds me of the saying: ‘Two man rat can’t live in the same hole’.

A savvy media operator, Woolley will no doubt be pushing for a stronger focus on race in the CEHR, but how will that go down with Phillips? Phillips has made a career out of controversial comments about race and it seems unlikely that he’ll want a board member encroaching on his pet topic, or even worse, potentially disagreeing with him.

Or perhaps this is a case of lining up a future replacement?

Staying with OBV, congrats are also in order for Lester Holloway, editor of the OBV blog who has been appointed Liberal Democrats  ‘race champion’ in London.

As I’ve made clear on this blog, I’m not a member of any political party. I’ve found them all pretty dismal when it comes to BME representation- the LibDems more than most.

Let’s hope that Lester can help them turn things around on that front.
