US racist killer arrested- but why did it take so long?

Posted on | August 12, 2010 | No Comments

Police in the US have arrested a man in connection with several racist stabbings in Michigan, Virginia and Ohio.

The suspect was caught after the FBI were called in to help with the investigation. Five men have been murdered in Michigan and a further 15 attacked in the three states.

Police had released a sketch of the suspect and over 500 people called officers with information on the man. One of those tips led officials to Beecher, Michigan, where they believe he worked in a party store. The man was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday. The last attack was on Saturday in Ohio when a minister was stabbed outside his church whilst smoking a cigarette.

In several cases victims were attacked by the man after he got out his car and asked them for directions, he then stabbed them repeatedly in the stomach. In other instances the man asked for help with his car before stabbing the victim. Police say he was most active between 1am and 6am on Monday mornings. Officers in Virginia said the attacks were racially motivated, although police in Michigan would not comment.

All but two of the twenty victims were black.

US MAN KILLS BOY FOR ACTING LIKE A GIRL

What does this tell us about the world that we live in?

Are we that scornful/ashamed/disgusted by femininity?

“A 20-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter yesterday in connection to the fatal beating of a 17-month-old boy. Pedro Jones was babysitting his girlfriend’s child at the Shinnecock Indian Reservation on Sunday, and killed him “by striking him several times throughout his body with his closed fists and grabbing him by the neck,” according to court documents. When asked why, Jones said, “I was trying to make him act like a boy instead of a little girl.” Read more

Tower Hamlets candidates threaten Labour with legal action

Posted on | July 28, 2010 | No Comments

The Labour party just can’t seem to get it right in Tower Hamlets.

As reported here previously, party leaders were accused to trying to cherry pick the party’s candidate for the new position of mayor in the ethnically diverse borough. The initial selection system was denounced.

Hanging their heads in shame, the party leaders agreed that the process wasn’t fair and agreed to reinstate popular candidates neglected at the first stage. A decision was taken on 23 July to add more names to the shortlist.

Just three days later however, that decision was reversed.

Candidates are now threatening legal action to force the party to reverse the decision.

Local activists are peeved at all of the drama, particularly since they thought the whole sorry mess was over after they initially complained. Why this insistence to cherry pick the Tower Hamlets candidate?

Child Serious case reviews should be retroactive

Posted on | July 27, 2010 | 1 Comment

Busy day for child protection professionals today.

The serious case review into the death of 7 year old Khyra Ishaq was finally released. Its the first report to be fully disclosed- a major step away from the days when only a brief executive summary was issued.

Children’s Minister Tim Loughton has rightly been boasting of his government’s committment to publish in full as demonstrated in the Ishaq case.

However, while the full disclosure of the Ishaq case is to be welcomed, there’s one case from the past that needs to be looked at again: that of Antoine and Keniece Ogunkoya. Read more
